Based on the Trailer | Doctor Strange

Breaking down Doctor Strange's teaser trailer

SPOILER ALERT!
The following may contain spoilers.

I recently saw the Russo brothers’ Captain America: Civil War for the third time this week and I literally can’t wait for the next Marvel installment, Doctor Strange! We won’t see the Sorcerer Supreme make his theatrical debut until this coming November, but for the meantime we can analyze and speculate on what to expect from the mystical Stephen Strange based on the first trailer.

Right away we are introduced to the famous doctor just as that, a remarkable surgeon who’s been saving countless lives via his medical mastery.

We see him in his surgical attire as well as in an elegant black suit, serving as an expression of his sophistication.

Everything soon changes when his life and career is shattered after a terrible car accident that leaves him unable to use his hands. Based on the trailer the car accident seems to happen after some kind of party, since he is wearing the same elegant black suit in second 00:41 of the trailer.

A desperate Stephen Strange is then forced to find meaning in life again, which puts him in contact with the world of mysticism and multiple realities.

“You are a man looking at the world through a keyhole,” said the Ancient One played by Tilda Swinton, to Doctor Strange.
This is definitely true and Strange realizes this when he searches for answers in what looks like the snowy mountains of southern Asia, maybe the Himalaya mountain range.

Filming for Doctor Strange was actually done in the city of Kathmandu, Nepal. We will have to wait for the movie first though to see if that same setting will be the one mentioned.

It is there that the Ancient One in mystical fashion shows him “possibility,” sending him on a carnival ride through multiple realities. This shot is beautifully executed at minute 1:09.

Through minute 1:17 and 1:20 we see Mads Mikkelsen’s character, possibly the main villain in the movie, interact with ever-changing dimensional gateways. We also see two individuals with him, possibly his evil apprentices.

The Ancient One then filters Strange through an Inception-looking New York City, which looks terrific. After his carnival ride through the Ancient One’s introductory sample of mysticism, Stephen Strange in absolute amazement just says: “teach me”.

Baron Mordo, played by Chiwetel Ejiofor, who we see at second 00:57 and at minute 1:27, might be an ally of Strange who then might turn to the dark side, as he did in the comics. It’s possible that the movie will center on the journey of both Strange and Mordo with the Ancient One, and after defeating the principal villain of the movie, Mordo will be filled with envy towards Strange, because of Strange’s superior mystical talents.

The trailer ends with a fabulous shot of a semi-silhouetted Doctor Strange in his classic robes walking up the stairs towards the light in what looks like the Ancient One’s temple.

Benedict Cumberbatch is Doctor Strange
With the introduction of intricate mysticism and Doctor Strange in the Marvel Cinematic Universe it will be interesting to see how that world of magic intertwines with the cosmic stage of the Guardians of the Galaxy, Thanos, and Thor, as well as Vision, Scarlet Witch, and the Avengers.

The Doctor Strange movie is set to make the MCU completely weird and abstract, which in turn leaves Marvel a lot of room to experiment and go in any wanted direction.

With Doctor Strange literally anything is possible, and we got to see a little of that in this first teaser trailer.

Doctor Strange is scheduled to release this fall on November 4 and stars Benedict Cumberbatch as the Sorcerer Supreme.

The film is directed by Scott Derrickson who directed the 2005 horror-drama movie The Exorcism of Emily Rose and the 2008 sci-fi movie The Day the Earth Stood Still.
