Exploring the Suicide Squad

Will the Suicide Squad live up to the hype?
By Lone Lez

After receiving vast amounts of negative criticism from the recent Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, the next movie in line in Warner Bros.’s DC Extended Universe is the Suicide Squad. While Dawn of Justice was disliked in some part due to its dark and serious tone, the Suicide Squad seems to be heading in the other direction as we’ve seen in the recent trailers.

A team of lunatic criminals and super-powered psychopaths, the Suicide Squad promises to offer something different, combining the elements of humor and sarcasm, with the action and over-the-top stunts that you’d expect from a group of DC villains.

While we won’t know how good the film is until we experience it in theaters this summer, one way to tackle the question is by briefly analyzing the main cast of actors and actresses and the chemistry they might share with each other. So, let’s begin!

In the role of Harley Quinn we have the fabulous Margot Robbie. Most known for her amazing performance as the wife of notorious stockbroker Jordan Belfort (played by Leonardo DiCaprio) in the 2015 movie The Wolf of Wall Street, the Australian actress is definitely perfect for the role.

The Wolf of Wall Street
While her Wolf of Wall Street character may not be as crazy as Quinn, she was at least half as dangerously risky, going along with the deceptive schemes of her husband. Her role was also one important feature of the movie that elevated it to success.

The Wolf of Wall Street was not Robbie’s only movie in 2015, as she went along and starred in four other films, and appeared in one other as a cameo. One of those films was alongside Suicide Squad co-star Will Smith in Focus.

Will Smith will be playing team leader Deadshot, a master marksman of ultimate precision. The DC character was first introduced to live-action theatrical media in the CW’s television series Smallville, played by Bradley Stryker, and later in Arrow, played by Michael Rowe.

There is no doubt that the former Prince of Bel-Air is one of the best actors of our times, as he’s carried out remarkable performances in a multitude of films from all kinds of genres (The Pursuit of Happyness, Hitch, Independence Day, Men In Black).

Smith and Robbie in Focus
It will be interesting to see how Smith and Robbie interact in the Suicide Squad, as their chemistry in Focus was splendid. Smith played a skilled con man who later becomes Robbie’s mentor.

Next we have Jared Leto.

The Thirty Seconds to Mars lead vocalist will be playing the notorious archenemy of Batman: the Joker. Based on the trailer and production images, Leto’s Joker is very different than the rest of Jokers we’ve seen on the big screen.

Though It’s too early to compare him, I’m positive that his impersonation of the joker will be as memorable as Heath Ledger’s iconic role in The Dark Knight

Leto won an Academy Award for his performance as a transgender woman in the film Dallas Buyers Club and is also known for his performance in Mr. Nobody, as well as his appearance in the 1999 film Fight Club

Another aspect of Leto that will bring to life the character of the Joker, is his method of staying in character even when the cameras aren't rolling. With such commitment to his roles, the only thing we can expect from Leto is amazing acting.

While it looks like the Joker won’t be a part of the team of villains led by Deadshot, his presence in the movie is essential.

In the role of the mystical villain Enchantress we have the talented Cara Delevingne. Known for her performance in the 2015 movie Paper Towns based on the book of the same name, Delevigne is a young star that totally dominates each role she undertakes.

Delevingne is also a model and is known for her outgoing personality on social media sites like Instagram.

The Suicide Squad is further composed of:
  • Joel Kinnaman (2014’s RoboCop) as Rick Flag
  • Jai Courtney (Divergent series, Terminator Genisys) as Boomerang
  • Jay Hernandez (Takers, Max) as El Diablo
  • Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje (Concussion, Game of Thrones) as Killer Croc
  • Adam Beach (Walker, Texas Ranger; Law & Order) as Slipknot, and Japanese actress Karen Fukuhara as Katana
The film is also set to cameo Ben Affleck, reprising his role as Batman from Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice.

The Suicide Squad is part of the DC Extended Universe and is scheduled to release this summer on August 5, Wonder Woman on June 2017, and Justice League part one on November 2017.
